Coastal Protection Works in Sarpi Continues

Commissioned by the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia, "State Construction Company", Ltd. is carrying out road carpet reconstruction works on km117-km119 section of Senaki-Poti-Sarpi international motor road, as well as road and coastline widening, safeguarding and reinforcement works.

Today, the implementation of civil works was surveyed by Eka Sepashvili, Deputy Minister and Ioseb Ozashvili, Director of the Company.

Within the framework of the project, a special protective net is being installed on the cliff in order to prevent stonefall. Along 1.5 kilometers of the coast a 7.9-meter-high and 3.3-meter-wide stone armour is being constructed and 8,500 pieces of 10-ton tetrapods inserted. Rehabilitation of a 110-meter-long overpass has already been completed and a stonefall preventive net has been installed on the cliff.

On the Senaki-Poti-Sarpi international motor road, the traffic intensity is quite high with on average 15,000 cars travelling daily. Due to the storm waves the lower side of the road has been gradually washing away, which endangered the road, and correspondingly the transport and passengers travelling on it as well. The 932-meter-long rocky part of the road was also posing a serious problem, where stonefall was quite frequent. Boulders had been falling down the steep cliff almost year-round, which often resulted in injuring passengers and damaging cars and freight alike. This part of the road is an extension to the Sarpi check-point and is practically the shortest route for cars travelling from Europe through Turkey to reach South Caucasus or Asia.

After completing coastal protection works and installation of stonefall preventive net, the territory will become more protected and safer for the local populace, as well as international transporters and foreign passengers.

Coastal protection works on Sarpi are financed through the state budget and the total value exceeds ₾58 million. 100 people are employed at the site. The project is scheduled to be completed in 2016.
