Senaki-Poti-Sarpi highway rehabilitation continues

Rehabilitation of Senaki-Poti-Sarpi interstate highway is in its active phase. Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia, Davit Shavliashvili, Head of Autonomous Republic of Adjara, Archil Khabadze and representatives of local government observed the progress of ongoing works.

Senaki-Poti-Sarpi interstate highway has a traffic flow of 15,000 cars per day and night on average. Lower slope of the road has an inclination to fade due to the impact of storm waves threatening its steadiness as well as safety of vehicles and their passengers. 932 meter long rocky part of the road is problematic as intensive rockslides are common there. Rocks fall all-year round, often damaging passengers, vehicles and cargo.

This part of the road is located at the extension of Sarpi checkpoint which makes it a shortcut for vehicles traveling from Europe, crossing Turkey and heading towards South Caucasus or Asia. Therefore, road safety on this section is regulated not only by state legislature but international agreements as well.

As part of the project, rock-fall control grid will be arranged to prevent rock-sliding; 7,9 meter tall and 3,3 meter thick berm is being built along 1,5 km shoreline; 110 meter long overpass is under construction as well.

As a result of shoreline reinforcement and arrangement of rock-fall control grid, this area will become equally safe for local residents, foreign passengers and international carriers.

300 workers, mainly local residents are employed on the project. It should be highlighted that tetrapods used on the reinforcement are produced locally.

Sarpi coastline reinforcement project which costs 45 mln GEL is financed from the state budget. It is being implemented by "State Construction Company" Ltd on request of Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia. The project is planned to be completed next year.
