Shore protection and rock-fall prevention works in Sarpi

"State Construction Company" Ltd is proceeding with shore protection and rock-fall prevention works on Senaki-Poti-Sarpi interstate highway.

First Deputy Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia Giorgi Amashukeli, Head of Roads Department of Georgia, Vazha Panchulidze, Deputy Directors of "State Construction Company" Ltd Irakli Kuprava and Ucha Mamuchashvili observed the progress of the projects on site today.

"State Construction Company" Ltd carries out Sarpi shore reinforcement and rock-fall prevention works on request of the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia. Within the frameworks of the project a riprap with the height of 7,9  meters and 3,3 meters in width is being built along the entire coastline of Sarpi. 8,500 units of 10 ton tetrapods are being placed as well. In addition, rock-fall control grid is being fixed along 932 meter rocky side of the highway.

Sarpi coastline reinforcement project which costs 45 mln GEL is financed from the state budget. The ongoing works are planned to be completed this year. 300 workers, mainly local residents are employed on the project. It should be pointed out that tetrapods used on the reinforcement are produced locally.

Per night and day up to 15,000 vehicles move on Senaki-Poti-Sarpi interstate highway. Lower slope of the road has inclination to fade due to the impact of storm waves that threaten its steadiness as well as safety of vehicles and their passengers. Intensive landslides are common all-year round that often damage passengers, vehicles and cargo.

As a result of shoreline reinforcement and arrangement of rock-fall control grid, this area will become equally safe for local residents, foreign passengers and international carriers.
